Fail to take your blood sugar levels seriously and sooner (rather than later) you're going to have foot problems that could easily lead to amputation.

Diabetic foot neuropathy occurs when you are diabetic and you ignore your high blood sugar levels, resulting in blood vessel and nerve damage within your body.

First, you may develop burning pain or numbness in your feet from inadequate blood flow.

Soon, a simple cut or blister could become infected because you didn't even know you had a slight injury.

Next, that minor injury snowballs, and before you know it your life is reduced to a wheelchair because you've lost your foot!

From that point, lack of exercise makes matters worse and your general health quickly declines.

You know where this is headed, don't you? Yes, failure to maintain a safe blood sugar level can become life-threatening surprisingly fast.

Here are some foot tips for diabetics and home remedies that will help you avoid the serious effects of diabetes...

How Diabetes Affects Your Body

They say that when you're diabetic, the 3 areas of the body that get affected the most are:

feet

eyes

kidneys

The reason? Those are the parts of your body with the smallest blood vessels.

How To Avoid Diabetic Foot Problems

If you're diabetic, then you want to do this now to avoid serious problems later:

1. Wash and dry your feet daily.
Use warm water and mild soaps. Rinse well and pat dry (rather than rubbing your feet dry with a towel). Remember, the point is to not irritate the skin. Apply lotion to retain moisture in your feet, but don't use lotion between the toes! The area between your toes needs to dry completely, since moisture allows bacteria to grow which can lead to Athletes Foot infections.

2. Inspect your feet daily.
Examine your feet looking for sores, cuts, abrasions. Also look for swelling, blisters, or cracks between the toes. Inspect the soles of your feet too. One of the signs of diabetes is loss of feeling in the feet. This means you could step on a sharp object that penetrates your foot and not even know it! If getting up close and personal with your feet is physically impossible, then have your spouse (or even a neighbor) check them for you as often as possible.

3. Trim your toenails & care for foot sores properly.
Keeping your toenails trimmed neatly and straight across will help avoid ingrown toenails or cuts from one toe rubbing against another. Never use commercially available corn preparations. They can damage skin, and any open sore is likely to become infected and spread. When you have diabetes, foot ulcers can be very slow or impossible to heal.

4. Wear shoes that fit properly.
Avoid the bare foot or flip flop look. When you are susceptible to diabetes, you need to look at footwear as a protective shield against injury. Your feet need to be comfortable with adequate room for your toes. Poor-fitting footwear can cause blisters and abrasions quickly -- which won't heal properly if you're diabetic.

5. See your doctor regularly.
Stay current with your Hemoglobin A1c test (also known as HA1C blood tests). Follow your doctor's instructions concerning the frequency of blood test strip checks. Monitor your blood sugar religiously. The better you control your blood sugar levels now, the better your odds of avoiding traumatic foot problems later on.

When I was first diagnosed with Type II Diabetes about 7 years ago, keeping my blood sugar in check was a simple matter of taking one pill a day. I was still able to eat whatever I wanted. But over time, diabetes changes within your system. Now, my prescription has increased to double that amount, and I take it twice a day. Plus, I have to take a second medication to control my diabetes as well.

The point is don't assume things are and will continue to be just fine. Keeping diabetes under control will be an ongoing challenge for the rest of your life. Maintaining mobility is much easier with 2 good feet. It's in your best interest to take care of them... daily!

More About Diabetes And Your Feet

Slideshow: How Diabetes Affects Your Feet

Characteristics Of The Diabetic Foot

Diabetic Foot Care

Foot Complications When You Have Diabetes

Ways That Diabetes Affects Your Feet

Diabetic Foot Care - An Interactive Tutorial

Are you embarrassed to be seen with your toes in plain view because your nails are disfigured, yellowed, thick or broken?

Welcome to the world of Onychomycosis. Toenail fungus is a common condition afflicting up to 50% of the over-40 population.

Fungus loves warm, moist feet that are trapped all day in hot shoes -- preventing evaporation and giving all those mold spores an excellent environment to grow. There's something to be said for being barefoot in the summer.

Thankfully, there's a new treatment option available for those with toenail fungus.

Here's what you need to know to make an educated decision as to whether the laser toenail fungus treatment is best for you or not...

Toenail fungus can be an indicator of more serious health issues.

Beyond being unattractive, affected nails can cause shoes to be uncomfortable and make walking difficult.

Irritation can lead to infections and in the case of diabetics, a toenail fungus could complicate their condition even further.

Toenail Fungus Treatment

There are a variety of treatments for toenail fungus. Most have a questionable success rate.

For example, creams and gels are about 8% effective.

Lamasil is about 50% effective, but regular blood tests are required to make sure liver damage doesn't occur.

But now there is a new treatment -- an alternative to lengthy attempts to cure this difficult condition. Laser treatment for toenail fungus only requires one trip to the specialist for treatment. It's a simple 30-minute procedure that is painless, has no side affects, and is now available. It's success rate is up to 88%!

This ABC News article and video on laser treatment for toenail fungus tells the whole story.

How It Works

The laser is set to penetrate to the level where the fungus lives and kills it instantly.

Of course, the process will still take many months since new nail growth is a slow process.

The benefit health wise is you're not permeating your body with powerful drugs over a 3-month period. Drugs that could cause permanent liver damage.

The cost for laser treatment for a toenail fungus can be expensive. Your one-time visit to the doctor will run in the neighborhood of $1,200. In most cases, health insurance companies look upon the procedure as purely aesthetic. Therefore, most will not cover the cost of the treatment.

If you do opt for laser treatment for your toenail fungus, keep in mind that curing the fungus doesn't mean that you will never be afflicted by the problem again. If your feet continue to live in the same environment (moist, warm, prime mold-growing conditions), or if your daily foot hygiene isn't the best, then the likelihood of a recurrence is almost guaranteed.

Watch this video of a laser toenail fungus treatment to see what's involved. Then you can make an educated decision on whether this is the treatment for you.

The problem comes in that her feet (and half way up her calves) appear as though they are covered in blood.

She appears to be trying to "bust a move" but the pose along with the lighting (which for some reason is red of all colors!) gives her a very unflattering appearance. Again, I don't think this is her fault, somebody wasn't paying attention to the lighting and how it was showing up on stage.

Jessica Simpson: Bare Feet or Not?

I have to admit though that my favorite comment about Jessica and her feet comes from a blogger who commented on her outfit at the Cannes Film Festival. She's wearing a very stylish white and brown dress which looks good on her -- especially with her blond hair and dark tan.

However, what the blogger was really commenting on were her feet and the sandals she was wearing.
You've probably had a blister on your foot at one time or another. We all have.

All it takes is a new pair of shoes that you decide to wear to work for the day to break them in, and bam a few hours later you've got a blister!

Or maybe you decide to wear that favorite pair of shoes -- without socks -- and suddenly you discover that your favorite shoes are rubbing you raw.

However you get them, blisters are a fact of life.

Here's how to treat (and ultimately prevent) blisters on your feet...

Why Blisters Form

Blisters need 3 things to form:

moisture

heat

friction

So that means that if your foot gets hot and starts to sweat, and you're wearing shoes that are rubbing against your skin just right, then you can get a blister.

How Blisters Form

Blisters are simply a build-up of fluid between different layers of skin.

A blister is created when something rubs the outer layer of skin and causes it to then rub the inner layer of skin. This, in turn, causes the outer layer to come loose from the inner layer. It is at this point that your body then fills up the space with lymph fluid.

When this happens, the outer layer loses any contact with oxygen and nutrients, and at that point becomes dead skin.

If you pop the blister, or it pops on its own, then your skin is no longer protected since the outer skin is dead.

Should You Pop Blisters?

Personally, I always pop my blisters with a sterilized needle, drain them and then put a bandaid with antibiotic cream on them to keep them from getting infected.

However, there are some people who say that you should never pop a blister. Why? Because the blister is "nature's bandaid." It's thought if you pop a blister, bacteria will have contact with the unprotected skin, which leaves you open to infection.

That said, there are some times when popping a blister is necessary -- such as when it interferes with your being able to wear your shoes. Or, when the blister interferes with other things that you need to do in life.

How To Treat Foot Blisters

There are many different schools of thought when it comes to treating blisters on the feet. Here are some of the most popular tips for caring for blisters:

Only pop a blister with a sterilized needle.

You can sterilize a needle by dipping the tip in rubbing alcohol. It is not suggested to put the tip of your needle into a flame because fire can oxidize anything (including coatings that are on the metal needle) and these then form a black particulate that can get onto the exposed skin beneath a blister and cause an infection later on.

Don't remove the skin from a blister once you've popped it.

Instead leave it there, add some antibiotic cream and a bandaid. This will help to protect the skin underneath and keep the skin beneath the blister from becoming infected.

Make sure the bandaid stays in place.

If you're going to be on your feet for a long time, then consider adding some duct tape over the bandaid to keep it in place. The reason? Because the adhesive on bandaids rarely holds up to sweaty feet. Bandaids on feet almost always come off! Do not put the duct tape directly onto the blister -- whether it has popped or not -- because the adhesive could cause an infection.

Soak your blistered foot in Epsom salts and warm water.

Soak for 20-30 minutes, then air dry your foot. You can do this up to 3 times a day. Epsom salts will help your foot not sweat as much. Epsom salts may also help in the prevention of new blisters.

Make your own blister paste.

You can make a paste by combining Preparation H (suppository kind), Vitamin E (you can break open capsules), and Bacitracin. Then, slather it on your blister. Wrap the affected area in Saran Wrap and cover your foot with a white cotton sock. The heat from the sock warms up the paste, and the Saran Wrap holds the paste on the affected area.

How To Prevent Feet Blisters

Here are some things you can do to prevent blisters from forming on your feet in the first place:

Wear the right kind of socks.

Acrylic fibers have been proven to be better than cotton fibers in preventing the frequency and severity of friction blisters in running athletes.

Much-ballyhooed cotton sweat socks don't offer the best protection against blisters. In fact, sports podiatrists say that manmade acrylic socks are best for preventing blisters. Cotton fiber becomes abrasive with repeated use, and it also compresses and loses its shape and 'cushion' when wet. The shape of the sock is critical when it's inside a shoe. So a sock that loses its shape is just what your blister-vulnerable foot doesn't need. Source

Wear two pairs of socks.

Wearing a thinner pair of knee highs underneath your socks provides a barrier for blisters since the thinner pair of socks stays in place well.

Make sure you're wearing the right shoes.

Purchase shoes that do not have painful pressure points and are a good fit overall. Sometimes it's the shoe you are wearing that is the problem. Who hasn't found this pair of shoes that they just loved, but the store only had the size that was one half less than your normal size? Who hasn't been tempted, and then discovered they'd made a huge mistake because there was too much friction and blisters were forming? This is why buying shoes that fit well is so important.

Wear different shoes everyday to help your feet to not be “rubbed” in the same places. Source

Apply a lubricant.

By lubricating your feet with things like petroleum jelly, Body Glide, Blister Shield or Sport Slick, you will help to prevent chafing. Since that's what causes blisters to begin with, it's in your best interest to lubricate your feet first.

Rub baby powder on your feet.

Do this before you leave the house. Baby powder reduces friction and eases glide.

Cover blister-prone areas before you leave the house.

Put bandaids or duct tape on any areas that you tend to get blisters. That way, the friction will be on the bandaid or tape instead of your skin.

A moleskin pad (available at most drugstores) is the best preventive measure for the blister-prone, and it's also great for relieving pain once the blister forms. Source

When all else fails...
Make a small cut in your shoe at the pressure point to relieve some of the pressure. While this may not be the best way to have your shoes last the longest, if you are hiking and can feel you're going to get a blister, and don't have blister care supplies with you, this may be an option worth considering.

RELATED:

How To Prevent Chafing And Blisters

Home Remedies For Foot Blisters Shared By Athletes

Foot Blisters: Preventing & Healing Skin Blisters

Products for Treating Foot Blisters

I suffer from Plantar Fasciitis, an inflammation of tendons in the arch and heel of the foot. It's a reoccurring pain in the heel that can travel up the calf of your leg making walking any distance downright torture.

The best way I've found to control this type of foot pain is to wear shoes that give very good support to both the arches and ankles.

Z-Coil shoes claim to be shock absorbers for the body, reducing the impact created when the weight of your whole body comes down on a very small structure: the heel of your foot.

Another problem I have with standard shoes is I wear off the heel on the outside edge. This may be due to arthritis or other changes over the years, because it has become more noticeable the older I get.

Z-Coil shoes not only are professionally adjusted to your specific foot and walking pattern, they also have replaceable heel pads. For a modest cost, your local Z-Coil dealer can replace your worn heel pad and readjust its positioning when you walk in order to maintain that relief from pain that you noticed the very first time you walked in your Z-Coil shoes.

Unfortunately, this means you can't go to your local discount store and hope to find a rack of Z-Coil styles to choose from.

This is specialized footwear that is only available at authorized stores.

You could find yourself traveling a few hundred miles to find the nearest location. But it's worth it!

Reviews of Z-Coil Shoes & Others

Public acceptance of these shoes is varied. They definitely don't look like most shoes that you've seen (or worn) before!

Speaking as one who must contend with foot pain for months at a time, the cost of about $200 combined with the superhero look of the coil spring isn't quite enough to completely remove the Z-Coil shoes as an option for me. Others would disagree. Some think Z-Coil shoes look like a 6th grade science fair project!

Of course there are other options when it comes to shoes designed to alleviate foot pain. For considerably less money (about half) and with a more traditional style, Gravity Defyer shoes offer the same benefits as the Z-Coil shoes. Being able to walk down the street without people gawking at your feet does have some merit.

Here's a comparison of Z-Coil shoes vs Gravity Defyer shoes.

Another option is the Masai Barefoot Trainer (aka "the anti-shoe"). The claims are that the MBT improves posture -- which in itself may reduce back, hip, leg and foot pain. However, this footwear admits to being unstable. The whole point of the MBT shoe is the curved sole, which activates numerous muscles strengthening the body. It's an interesting approach, though one that should be examined cautiously.

Of the 3 examples listed here, the Z-Coil name has the largest presence on the Internet. Overall comments about customer satisfaction appear to be overwhelmingly positive. Good Housekeeping apparently thinks otherwise. Although rebuttals to that negative magazine article are also quite prevalent.

Research Your Options

My one word of caution would be the fact that the wide-based heel with a narrow support could catch on things creating a tripping situation.

When it comes to foot pain relief, some people tend to take a desperation approach and buy the first thing that sounds good. Instead, it's important to explore a variety of options whenever possible. Making the best choice depends on a number of factors. No one product is the perfect answer for every situation and every person. Shop carefully and listen to the advice of your podiatrist before making your own decision as to the best way to address your foot pain.

RELATED:

Z-Coil Shoes Fight Plantar Fasciitis

How Z-Coil Shoes Help To Alleviate Pain

A Mom's Review of Z-Coil Shoes

This time, it's Fergie feet pictures.

One blog called Media Takeout actually made a big deal about Fergie's feet being dirty!

Here's the story: That's NASTY!... Fergie Hits the Red Carpet With Some Dirty Azz Feet

Personally, I looked at the picture of Fergie's feet that they provided, and I can't really see what they're talking about.

You can just barely see the bottom of her feet! Yes, they're a little darker, but it isn't from dirt. I agree with the commenter who said she thought it was from sunless tanning lotion. That is what it looks like to me, too. I think her feet look fine.

Another blog (Stupid Celebrities Gossip) has a story about Fergie being at the airport and trying to check in when security decided they needed to more closely inspect the knee-high boots she was wearing.

I found this pretty humorous, considering these babies were skin tight. And the chances of her being able to get anything into them besides her feet and legs was clearly nil. Apparently, security both shook out her boots and scanned them anyway, just to be sure.

Here are the pics of Fergie undressing her feet in public.

One website called Trend 911 commented on Fergie's footwear for one event last summer as being "tough looking" with formal stilettos, but that her toenails were well-groomed.

When I look at the picture, I just see a cool looking pair of sandals that are maybe a little less formal than some -- since they have more straps than the traditional sandal might. I think they look stylish. And who wants to wear formal gowns and shoes all the time, anyway? That's got to get old!

Check out Fergie's well-groomed toenails in tough looking stilettos.

And in other Fergie feet news...

Did you know that Fergie has her own shoe line? Well she does, and it made its grand debut a couple months ago.

She's a big fan of gladiator style shoes, so some of the sandals in her shoe line have that look. Incidentally, that's the same type of shoe she was wearing when the above-mentioned writer called her shoes "tough looking." I wonder if those were shoes from her own shoe line?

Fergie is one of the only women I know who could do high-heeled gladiator sandals with style!

Here's video footage of Fergie getting a pedicure:

Whether you love Fergie's feet or not, you have to admit that she has style. Regardless of whether she's barefoot or wearing a pair of the stylish gladiator type shoes she seems to really love, she is definitely someone worth following.

World Record Feet

The record for the person with the biggest feet in the world is held by an American named Robert Wadlow.

His feet were 47cm long and he wore size 37 shoes!

Another American, Mr. Matthew McGrory claims to have the largest feet in the world (a discrepancy from the previous fact, but worth mentioning).

McGrory is 7-foot 4-inches tall and his big feet are a whopping size 28-1/2. He has to fork out a massive $22,745 for a pair of shoes to fit his unusually large feet!

Interesting Foot Facts

Nine out of 10 women are wearing shoes that are too small simply because they believe the theory "if the shoe fits, wear it."

During the first year of a child's life, their feet grow rapidly -- reaching almost half their adult size. By the age of 12, a child's foot is about 90% of its adult length. (This means my daughter's feet will grow at least another shoe size.)

It's rare that both of a person's feet would be exactly the same size; one of them is often larger than the other.
may have inherited big feet.

Your large feet may have resulted from diseases that make feet larger.

It's worth noting... if you think you are having problems with your big feet, then you should consult a doctor.

How To Make Big Feet Appear Smaller

While high heels may not be as good for your big feet (or body), they will make your feet look smaller.

When wearing sandals, choose sandals with thick straps, rather than thin straps.
.

<a It is very possible, since they have been around since 1962.

Havaianas are a bit more expensive than your average flip flops -- which are generally less than $5 a pair. On the other hand, Havaianas typically sell for between $15 to $30 a pair.

Check out this video: "You can't wear just any flip flops... it's all about the Havaianas!"

How Are Havaianas Different?

Havaianas were inspired by Japanese Zori sandals that are made of fabric straps and rice straw soles. Well, Havaianas began to distinguish themselves from knock-offs as early as 1970 when they launched a commercial stating that "they don't lose their shape, they don't smell, and the straps don't get loose", unlike other flip flops.

Since the 1990's Havaianas have been the height of flip flop fashion and are frequently featured in fashion magazines whenever new prints, colors and models are added to the lineup.

Would you believe they even have a line of Havaianas for babies? Under a special partnership with jeweler, H. Stern, there was once a line of Havaianas that featured a gold finish embedded with diamonds

My personal favorite is the sleek Havaianas FIT line that adds a back ankle strap to the flip flop, for a more dressed up look and a bit of added support.

Havaianas Reviews

Having never actually worn a pair of Havaianas (not for the lack of coveting them) I looked to the Internet to see what others are saying about this unique line of footwear.

Here are some reviews of Havaianas:

Havaianas vs Spartan Flip Flops

Plus Size Review: Why Havaianas Are Good For Larger Feet

Customer Reviews of Havaianas on Amazon

Old Navy Rubber Flip Flops vs Havaianas

See where Havaianas are made with a look inside the factory in Brazil:

Where To Buy Havaianas

The Gap (basic models)

Amazon (large selection)

Zappos (free shipping both ways)

Piperlime (free shipping, free returns)

Havaianas Official Website (full product lines)

As we age and our feet lose their ability to maintain a proper arch, irritation can occur and heel pain will soon follow.

Plantar Fasciitis is often referred to as flip flop disease because the root cause of the problem is lack of arch support or ankle support. One thing for sure, flip flops don't offer any support.

Beyond good shoes, I also purchased a set of Dr. Scholl's Massaging Gel Heel Cups. The combination of the two provided some immediate relief. I could then continue my day to day life as I worked to correct the condition.

About a year later, my wife came down with Plantar Fasciitis. Being familiar with the problem, we addressed it vigorously and her recovery was much faster. Of course, she wasn't very happy about the fact that as we age, we need to wear more practical footwear that offers good arch support throughout the day.

She has accepted her "granny shoes," and we both continue to wear cushioned shoe insole inserts to guard against the recurrance of Plantar Fasciitis Heel pain can quickly lead to a loss of mobility. With a little common sense, you can correct this painful condition. And better yet, you can avoid it altogether.

Plantar Fasciitis Relief

To further improve the condition of your feet, try stretching exercises to help lengthen the Achilles Tendon.

Here's how:

1. Curl your big toe up as you stretch your foot toward the shin of your leg.

2. Do this about 5-10 times in one sitting.

3. Repeat this exercise several times throughout the day.

4. This simple stretching activity helps return flexibility to your foot.

5. This stretching exercise is most effectively done in stockings or bare feet.

Other things that commonly help with Plantar Fasciitis relief include:

a Plantar Fasciitis night splint

the daytime Plantar Fasciitis brace

a Plantar Fasciitis Sock

10 Steps For Effective Relief From Plantar Fasciitis

This professional Physical Therapy video has some good exercises to help treat Plantar Fasciitis:

Not only does she have a large fan base, but so do her feet.

I personally find it interesting that she thinks her feet are ugly. She actually thinks they are the ugliest thing about her and can't understand why her boyfriend Stuart Townsend loves them so much.

I suspect that most fans will forgive her choice of footwear, as long as she keeps being her lovely self.

Charlize Theron Shoes

When Charlize Theron went to the premier for her movie The Burning Plain, she arrived in some very high heels. So high in fact, that she towered over her director and co-stars without any problem. The stiletto heels -- which were black snakeskin with gold heels -- put her normally 5-foot 10-inch frame over 6 feet tall.

Despite a dress that made her look like she was wrapped in gold shiny giftwrap (and would make the rest of us normal women look bad), she pulled it off beautifully. Of course, I would never have attempted those heels for fear of falling on my backside. But then that's just me.

Charlize's shoe size is 9-1/2, and her feet are shaped in such a way as to make them appear long and large. It must be hard for her to find shoes that fit just right.

From what I can see, Charlize Theron actually has pretty feet. While she claims the scars are there from her ballet years, I certainly can't see them, not even in up close photos. My guess is she is more aware of them because she sees her feet all the time. But the scars have largely faded and they really aren't as noticeable as she thinks.

Some of the most damaged skin can be found under the main foundation that carries you throughout the day -- that being the bottom of your feet.

Treating dry or cracked feet is even more critical if you happen to be Diabetic. With the majority of shoes being of the high heel variety, the potential for foot problems later in life is almost guaranteed.

I can't help but think the unusually high arch and odd shape of my wife's feet are at least partially the result of spending a working lifetime with her toes confined in shoes that are not only hard to walk in, but overall damaging to the basic structure of her foot.

Men's Shoes vs Women's

As a construction worker, I spent a good portion of my work life wearing steel toed boots. With these tall boots laced snuggly above my ankle, I was offered much more protection from falling objects courtesy of the steel reinforced toe. I was also provided with proper arch support, additional ankle support, and plenty of room to move my toes around. Though not all that stylish now, some 30 years later, my feet look as good as they did in my youth after a hard life of outdoor activity and cold weather.

If women's work shoes were geared more toward the practicality of men's construction shoes, maybe a few podiatrists would be forced out of business.

There is one problem with this theory though, finding that open-minded man that is attracted to a set of long slender legs running all the way down to a set of steel toed boots might be a bit difficult. As stated at the beginning, it's all about a preconceived idea of beauty.
