How To Un-Shrink Crocs Shoes That Have Shrunk

crocs-sandals-on-the-beach-by-sugarbeatl.jpg Owners of Crocs shoes become quite frustrated when they learn (usually after the fact) that Crocs shrink when exposed to high heat.

It’s true.

Some instances in which Crocs footwear are likely to shrink are:

  • when left in a hot car
  • when washed in the dishwasher
  • when left outside in the sun

Some have even said that their Crocs shrunk as much as 2 sizes!

Here’s what you can do if your Crocs shrunk, and you want to be able to wear them again.

How To Fix Shrunk Crocs

1. Wash them (in hot water) which loosens up the material.

2. Then, immediately wear them.

Probably the most effective way to do this is to place the shrunken Crocs in a pot of boiling water (for less than a minute). Then, take them out and immediately (as soon as you can bear the temperature of them outside of the water!) wear them for awhile.

This should make the Crocs come back to life and re-mold to your feet. They’ll seem tight at first, but wearing them can stretch them out a bit.

If you need to really stretch them out, try putting on 2 or 3 pairs of really thick socks first before you slip your foot into the freshly boiled Crocs. Then wear them around and let them remold to your thickly socked foot.

Looking For Other Ways To Un-Shrink A Pair Of Crocs?

Some have placed their Crocs in the clothes dryer (with some towels, for 2-3 minutes), or as a last resort, pointed a hot hair dryer at them for several minutes. Both of these methods can loosen up the Crocs material which allows them to re-stretch when you put your foot into them — if you walk around in them immediately.

However, even the Crocs company does not recommend that you microwave Crocs:

100% of all Crocs, Inc. Customer Service Representatives agreed, after thorough testing, that unless your Garden Gnome is in search of Lilliputian sized Crocs shoes, we do not recommend this action. — Crocs

Sometimes It Works, Sometimes It Doesn’t

Quite honestly, there is no magic formula here…

Sometimes these methods of getting the Crocs really hot again work well and sometimes they doesn’t.

It probably has something to do with the fact that different pairs of Crocs are made from different  batches of material, and any slight change in the formulation could ultimately affect their shrinkability.  Such is why some people (many people) have left their Crocs out in the sun, in hot parked cars, or in the dishwasher and had no issues with Croc shrinkage.

You should also know that the older the Crocs are, the more likely they are to become a little mis-shapen or warped after being exposed to any form of high heat. So try these fast-heat methods for un-shrinking Crocs at your own risk!

In the end, just remember that Crocs can shrink in as little as 30 minutes in high heat conditions.

Better safe than sorry, keep your Crocs in cool, shady places when they’re not being worn. (When Crocs are worn in high heat conditions, they can still shrink a bit. It’s just that your foot being inside of them will help to re-stretch any shrinkage as it occurs.

BONUS: Of course, the reverse is true as well. If you buy Crocs that are a tad too bit, just toss them into hot water first (or leave them in the sun), and don’t wear them right away. Let them cool down on their own and retain their own shape. When you put them on again, they should be at least a little bit smaller.

OMG, this WORKS GREAT!!!! I have bought 4 pairs of Malindis, all size 9. All 4 are sized a little differently. One, I couldn’t even wear, my daughter wears a size 8, and they were even too small for her. One pot of boiling water, a quick dunk and a large pair of fuzzy socks later, I can wear all of them comfortably! I wish I’d known about this earlier.

    Thanks, Lynette!!!

It worked! I put it in the water, and took it out just before the boiling point. It was my toddlers crock, so I didn’t want to put it on his foot. I just stretched it out my hand. Thanks for the help!

Thanks for these directions! I just did it now with a pair and they’re perfect. Actually, I stretched them out too much the first time, so I had to put them back into the still-hot bucket of water and then wore them again with a pair of thinner socks.

Call Crocs they will replace them one time РI just had it out with them since my replacement pair also shrunk and this was from normal ware.  How does a company sell shoes they know shrink??????

I can’t believe it! I was on an airplane for 2 hrs, was not exposed to high heat and my croc sandals shrank!!!!! They were almost 3 sizes smaller! I thought someone stole my shoes! I will definitely have to try the boiling water remedy.

I had left my croc flip-flops out in the sun for almost a week and they had shrunk significantly. When I found this idea, I decided to try it to resurrect my favorite shoes. I did it this morning, and my crocs are back to normal! Thank you soooo much!

Thank you. I left my crocs in my car ONE day (lol it’s in Texas) and the right one shrunk at least 1-2 sizes. At first I honestly thought my foot had blown up (here’s your sign!). I’m going to try this now!
