Z-Coil Shoes Alleviate Foot & Back Pain As You Walk

zcoil-hiking-shoes.jpg Have you seen commercials for Z-Coil shoes on TV? We have a store here in Nashville, and I've been seeing a lot of commercials for Z-Coil on TV lately.

I've also seen quite a few people wearing these shoes -- both here, and in other states. And, I have to say... while they look quite unique, they are intriguing and interesting to say the least.

I thought I'd see what this fun new form of footwear was all about. Here's what I've learned:

Did You Know?...
Z-Coil shoes are not sold online or in regular shoe stores. Here's why:

In order to achieve the greatest pain-relief benefits possible from Z-CoiL footwear, we require all customers to be custom-fitted in our shoes by qualified authorized Z-CoiL distributors. This is why Z-CoiL footwear is not sold over the Internet or in regular shoe stores. -- Z-Coil

For example, you can't just take a pair of Z-Coil shoes off the shelf and wear them. Instead, each pair of Z-Coils has up to 32 different adjustments that can be made, and it can take an hour or longer to custom-fit a pair of Z-Coils for an individual.

How They Workzcoil-shoe-spring.jpgThe patented design of Z-CoiL footwear combines a large coil under the heel with a rigid, 3/4-length orthotic.

Each step you take while merely walking has an impact pressure of 2-3 times your normal weight. The stress of this impact is transmitted through your knees, your back, and can exacerbate existing conditions. Z-coil shoes remove much of that strain by absorbing the impact of each step you take. -- Northern California Neurosurgery

Check out the Z-Blog Reporter -- the unofficial blog of Z-Coil footwear. It's written by a Z-Coil shoe owner (6 pairs). Fun facts and interesting publicity about Z-Coils.

Want to know more about the Z-Coil story?... Here is the inventor, Alvaro Z. Gallegos's story.

Z-Coil Dealer Blogs
zcoil-walking-shoes.jpgMost of these Z-Coil dealers started out as Z-Coil customers. And there's something to be said for a satisfied customer that decides to make it their business. Some of these Z-Coil dealer blogs have not been updated in awhile, but I still like to peruse through the archives to find learn about others' experiences with Z-Coil shoes.

Z-Coil Controversy (Old News)
I like to be in the loop when it comes to the pro's and con's of a particular product. And there's a chance you might find some reference to the controversial Good Housekeeping report. So here's the scoop...

Zoils: Good & Expensive
z-coil-sandals.jpgI have to admit... as strange as they look, I'd definitely wear Z-Coils. I'm just not sure I can afford 'em. (They cost about $200 a pair.) I also like that they're made in the USA.

You're looking at about $200 for running shoes, $220 for dress shoes and $190 for sandals. -- O Gizmo!

Where are zcoils in Central Florida?

Mary De Zarn

No they do not cover them. There is a ton of paperwork and many months to be approved for them to pay. They were asked many years ago when it was easier but they would not approve them without changes. These changes would alter their function and Z-CoiL would not change the shoe to fit the bill. They would not be the shoe that they are with these changes. Other insurance has paid for the shoes. I suggest that you call your insurance carrier and ask. If they do then talk to your doctor and get the prescription prior to purchase.

Does Medicare pay something toward z-coil shoes.
If it does how do I get a form from Medicare.

You can purchased the Safety heel that goes on all the shoes that has an enclosed coil. It makes them look better to some people but the safety heel is basically for those that work around cords, wires etc. The open coil has a 50% energy return and the enclosed coil only has a 30%. It doesn't take away from the shoe as an aid for pain relief but with the open coil you have more energy at the end of the day.

Mary De Zarn

Go back to the dealer for an adjustment. They should be able to help with this problem but you have to let them know. Adjustments are free for the life of the shoes.

Do zcoil shoes have a style with enclosed heels for women?

Holly

Dear Donna,

Your experience is exactly like mine. I found Z-Coils in 2006 and have 4 pairs now. It would be nice to have some dressier styles, but that doesn't matter to me as much as pain relief. My job requires me to dress professionally and I do. When someone suggested that the Z-Coils looked "unprofessional" I said my other other options were crutches or a wheelchair but I couldn't find either in the Vogue catalogue.
Just can't get enough ZZZZZZs.

Donna

Hi. I have been wearing Z-Coil shoes (I have 2 pairs now.) since July of 2008. They have helped me so much! I have spurs on the bottoms and backs of both feet which has caused me tremendous pain, and made walking nearly impossible. My podiatrist is a very nice, caring doctor, but felt that surgery was inevitable. Since I was determined not to have surgery, for many justifiable reasons, I have been looking for alternative means to alleviate my pain. There were many months of treatment, including wearing air casts of different kinds for months ,(I did have a torn achilles tendon which made the casts necessary, but this was before I started wearing Z-coils. Maybe the tear wouldn't have happened if I had started wearing them much sooner . I don't know.) Since July, I wear the Z-Coils ALL the time. The spurs may still be there, I don't know if they will go away or not. I just know that I am much better off. My chiropractor even felt that my back was a lot better (I hadn't even noticed!). There does need to be care taken when wearing them, however, because of the springs. I am certainly no fashion model, I am simply a 52 year old grandmother, but have gotten numerous comments about the shoes, almost all have been positive, even asking where to get them. As for the cost, yes they are expensive, but no comparison to what surgery and all the costs of that is! Not to mention all the risks.

 Jenn

Erm...

Then visit the Zcoil website and use the store locator?

About the comment in the advert above- this statement is from the Z-Coil Mfr. Website- sorry to burst yer bubble- they are NOT made in the USA
"Z-CoiL Footwear is headquartered in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where the products are designed and engineered. Our products are manufactured in South Korea. Al Gallegos had tried for years to find a U.S. shoe manufacturer willing to produce his unusual shoes, but they all laughed at his idea and turned him down. At last he found a willing partner in South Korea who had 20 years of experience, which included making products for Nike® and Reebok®."

Connie
